Las Vegas is set to unveil the world’s most technologically advanced concert and event venue this year. The $2.2 billion MSG Sphere, located on the Vegas strip next to the Venetian hotel, is billed as the “first and only of its kind on the planet” and stands at 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide – the world’s largest spherical structure. The 20,000-seat venue, which has been designed to offer a unique audio experience across the entire audience, will open with a U2 residency on 29 September. Adventurous tech developments for the space include the use of ultra high-resolution cameras installed in the International Space Station by NASA to capture images of space, which will be used in Sphere’s immersive exhibit and reportedly even incorporate spacewalk footage.

The tech of a Vegas concert venue was tested by NASA at James Dolan’s MSG Sphere.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has partnered with Sphere, a new music and events venue set to open in Las Vegas later this year. The project is using ulra high-resolution cameras on the International Space Station to capture images of the solar system that will be featured at an immersive exhibit at the venue this fall. MSG Sphere will be the world’s largest spherical structure, towering at 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide with 580,000 square feet of LED panels. The venue is being equipped with some of the highest-end technology available, including 170,000 “ultra-direction” speakers providing high-end sound quality throughout the 20,000-seat venue. Big Sky, a new camera system with 10 separate patents, has been developed to shoot 360-degree video in ways no other camera can. The footage will initially be shown in the exhibition “Postcard from Earth,” which opens on Oct. 6, 2023, at MSG Sphere.
