Megyn Kelly says Bud Light is ‘a middle finger to women’

Megyn Kelly, the American journalist and former Fox News anchor, has claimed that drinking a can of Bud Light is comparable to “giving a middle finger to women”. The remark came during an episode of Kelly’s SiriusXM show when she commented on the brand’s sagging sales, following a marketing partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The deal is thought to have contributed to a $27bn drop in market value for Anheuser-Busch InBev, Bud Light’s parent company, which has faced calls for a boycott of the brand. Anheuser-Busch CEO Michel Doukeris subsequently disavowed the deal.

What was the marketing partnership between Bud Light and Dylan Mulvaney?
The deal, designed to promote the beer brand during March Madness, saw transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney become the face of a promotional campaign. However, the partnership was almost immediately disavowed by Michel Doukeris, the CEO of Anheuser-Busch InBev, Bud Light’s parent company.

What has been the impact of the partnership on the brand’s sales?
Bud Light has seen a decline in sales since the Mulvaney partnership was announced, with recent figures showing a steady fall in sales. In addition, people are reported to have been openly shaming the brand, with some concerned that ordering the beer could lead to being looked at in a negative light.

How has Anheuser-Busch responded to negative perceptions?
Anheuser-Busch has pledged to donate $200,000 to an LGBTQ+ nonprofit in an attempt to win back favour from customers. The company has also extended its partnership with the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce.

What is the future for Bud Light?
The ongoing boycott of the brand could push it into a bear market, with shares of Anheuser-Busch InBev currently sitting at $53.81. With sales continuing to decline, the company will either have to find a way to regain public trust or risk further significant losses in market value.
